The best and worst gift cards

They are more personal than cash but still give the gift recipient the power to choose what he or she wants, at least from a particular retailer. The cards also fit easily into an envelope for mailing or stocking stuffing.

But not all gift cards are equal, according to, a personal finance website.

The website recently issued a report ranking the best and worst gift cards to buy, based on purchase fees, expiration dates, balance requirements, ability to reload the card, shipping costs and ease of purchase.

The best cards were, in order: Nordstrom, Amazon, Walmart, Starbucks, Lowe’s, Macy’s, JCPenney, Target, Toys ‘R Us and Best Buy.
