In India, though the scooter segment is broadly subdivided into sections for men, women and students, the brand Vespa produced by Piaggio satisfies all types of customers. Vespa means wasp in Italian. The Vespa was sold in India from 1960 to 1971in collaboration with Bajaj and then later till 1999 with the partnership with LML. The iconic Vespa re-appeared in the Indian market when it was unveiled in the 2014 New Delhi Auto Expo.
The Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited opened their plant for scooters in the state of Maharashtra in early 2012 and launched the Vespa 125 LX and 125 VX in March 2012. The Vespa is one of the most revered vehicles in the world of two wheelers globally. Though never tried to price competitively, the Vespa is the leader in the premium scooter market. The Vespa S unveiled in the 2014 Auto Show and launched in March 2014 is the third two wheeler from the Italian company. Vespa S Premium scooter is priced at Rupees 75,424.
The Vespa S has a masculine appeal and is sporty with a retro touch. The 1970 styled square head lights are coming back on this scooter with square theme continuing on the mirrors. The instrument console in piano black tone has an analogue speedometer, a digital clock, a fuel gauge and tell-tale lights, though the small reset buttons seem to be a bit awkward. The moncoque steel chassis gives better maneuverability in city roads. Two slots on the body and a hook help for carrying additional cargo. There are an electric starter, turn lights, a pass signal, low fuel and low battery indicators and a pillion foot rest.
The125 cc, 10.06 bhp and 10.06 engine of the Vespa S gives a mileage of 60 kmpl. The clutch is automatic dry centrifugal type with vibration damper and the transmission is CVT type. The brakes are 200 mm disc type at the front and 140 mm drum type at the rear. The suspension is single side arm with a dual shock absorber at the front and the dual action spring shock absorber at the rear.
The dimensions of the Vespa S are 1770 mm length, 690 mm width and 1140 mm height. This 105 kg weight scooter has a fuel tank of 8.7/1.2 litre capacity. The 11” alloy wheels have 110/70 R11 tubes at the front and 120/70 R10 tubes at the rear. The Vespa S comes in 4 colours; the Monte Bianco, the Rosso Dragon, the Nero Matt and the Arancio Taormina.
