About a month ago we started getting reports of telemarketers calling Veterans to offer them VA Loan refinancing. Apparently these telemarketers we’re highly aggressive, calling multiple times per day at all hours, we got reports of them calling 6, 7 up to 10 times per day. We were also told that they we’re very rude, often hanging up on Veterans when they declined the offer and/or requested to be removed from the call list. When Veterans asked to be transferred to a supervisor they we’re hung up on, told to “shut up” or informed that now they are going to be called even more often. When they tried to call back the number gave them a not in service message or busy signal. Veterans who we’re on the Federal Do Not Call registry we’re getting calls, and when they informed the telemarketers of this the telemarketers reportedly seemed to not even care.
How did we get these reports? It turns the telemarketers we’re representing themselves as the “VA Loan Center”. As the operator of the VALoanCenter.net website, I started getting phone calls and emails from un-happy Veterans demanding to be removed from our calling list and chastising us for doing this kind of telemarketing. Veterans were Google-ing “VA Loan Center” and finding us in the search results, thinking we were the company behind it. Needless to say we we’re concerned about being associated with something so sleazy, as well as appalled that someone would initiate such a rude and aggressive telemarketing campaign targeted at Veterans. It prompted me to post the following on our website:
IMPORTANT NOTICE 8-11-2012: It has come to our attention that a company representing itself as a “VA Loan Center” has been performing an aggressive telemarketing campaign for VA refinance loans, calling Veterans several times a day in a somewhat harassing manner.
Please know that these calls are not from VALoanCenter.net and are in no way associated with VALoanCenter.net. WE DO NOT MAKE OR CONTRACT ANY OUTBOUND TELEMARKETING.
We are trying to identify the source of these calls to assist Veterans in stopping them. If you have been receiving these calls please email us the caller ID phone number to help us track them down. We also advise registering your phone number with the Federal do not call list at: www.donotcall.gov
Fortunately for us the calls and emails from people upset with us stopped, and we are now getting emails with information about the calls. We’ve been trying to track them down, but it’s been pretty tough. From what we can tell the callers are not from or in this country, we’re being told they have heavy Indian or Asian accents. This is likely a third party that has contracted a less than legitimate overseas telemarketing company to generate inquiries for VA refinance loans. Really, the only way we are going to get to the source of the calls, is to have someone who gets one engage them and tell them they are interested. This ultimately will lead to a U.S. based lender who gets the inquiry, and from there we can work through the channels at the company to try and put a stop to it.
Veterans deserve better than to be receiving harassing phone calls at all hours from third world telemarketers, and our opinion is whoever is behind it should be ashamed of themselves, and stopped.
